Often times, a water leak can catch you by surprise. Here are a few quick steps to take when dealing with an untimely leak at your home.
Assess The leak! While the source of some leaks are obvious, there are times where you may not be able to determine where the leak is coming from. If a pipe breaks and water is leaking at a rate faster than a drip, you should immediately turn off your water at the meter.
Don’t use utilities anywhere near the leak. If carpet or flooring is wet, don’t use any electrical utilities. (It’s a hazardous area)
Take care of your belongings! Make sure to move any furniture, rugs, and belongings to a dry place, away from the leak! While carpeting may get wet, do not attempt to lift it up. Carpets will shrink after getting wet and drying out.
Clean up any water from the leak with a mop or towels! If the leak can be contained with a bucket or container, start there, until a plumber can come out. Try and dry out as much of the space as possible and use fans to circulate the air.
